Hamrun sole leaders with maximum points

Hamrun were out this afternoon to register more points in their second match of the season after they managed a 3-1 win in their opening encounter against Qormi last week. But the Spartans faced Tarxien Rainbows a hard nut to crack with the latter failing to capitalize in their first match of the season by obtaining only a point from a goalless draw against Marsaxlokk.

The Spartans’ mentor Steve D’Amato opted for an initial 4-2-3-1 approach with Grima and Mangion as holding midfielders in front of his back four: Hrubsa, Roderick Fenech, Attard and Camilleri.

Hamrun showed more personality and were always smart in their possession. Shields and Pereira up front were a constant threat to Tarxien’s defence. Tarxien’s midfield was always on the chase as Tanti, Anonam and  Caruana invested much of their energy to minimize the continuous through balls that were initiated always from the Spartans shirts.

The game had a negative ending when seconds from the final whistle Calabretta’s late tackle on Lee James Agius left the Hamrun player in agony whilst his colleagues surrounded the Referee in protest for not punishing the Rainbows player with a straight red. Agius was later accompanied to Hospital for further treatment.

It was a well deserved win indeed for Hamrun who are now the only team to have registered maximum points and are proudly the sole leaders of the BOV Premier League.  Tarxien were once again not able to field Daniel Mariono Bueno due visa issues.

15min Marcelo Pereira opens the score for D’Amato’s side 1-0

22min Referee Paul Caruana punishes a handling inside the Hamrun area with a penalty transformed by Cristiano Dos Santos Rodriguez 1-1.

33min Massimo Grima heads home from close range from a corner thus scoring his first ever goal with the Spartans shirt 2-1.

60min Marcelo Pereira hits the upright after inserting himself in Curmi’s area. Previously Shields missed from close range seeing his shot well saved by Curmi.

74min Ryan Fenech concludes just wide after a serious of fine dribbling.

75min Cristiano Dos Santos Rodriguez misses the target from inside the penalty area.

81min Dene Shields takes advantage from a misunderstanding between Curmi and Mintoff and makes the score 3-1 with an easy finish.
