Hamrun 2 vs Qormi 1

Qormi started as favourites to win the three points this afternoon as they faced a depleted Hamrun side at the National Stadium in Ta` Qali. But that was not the way it turned out for them as they lost narrowly in a match which saw them play in ten men for exactly an hour. Azzopardi’s Qormi were coming from a 1-0 win against Marsaxlokk and had a high morale.

Hamrun’s defence had to be totally amended from their last match against Valletta due to the fact that both Martin Hrubsa and Roderick Fenech were suspended. Massimo Grima was given the job to lead the defence with a central defensive position accompanying former Melita FC player Steve Bonnici who last week played the role of holding midfielder against the Lilly Whites.

Qormi still walked off the pitch with their heads up after another disciplined performance and they now face Vittoriosa whilst Hamrun now face Tarxien.

First Half:

3min: Long ball for Matthew Bartolo who sees his close range shot well saved by in form Spartans keeper Borg.

13min: Omar Borg tips into a corner a cross shot by Matthew Bartolo. Afterwards he takes time to adjust his booth outside the playing area.

22min: Lee James Agius passes to Pereira with the latter giving the ball to Anizoba who tries his luck but sees Farrugia save in corner.

26min: Hojung Kang shoots just wide from approximately 40meters.

27min: Hamrun 1-0. Gaetan Spiteri beats Farrugia with a low shot that literally passes beneath him.

28min: Omar Borg saves a Bello Osagie Abubakar shot.

30min: Jonathan Bondin tackles Spiteri inside the Qormi area, Referee Arciola orders a penalty and send off Bondin to leave Qormi with ten men.

32min: Hamrun 2-0. After several protests by the yellow black players Ryan Fenech converts from the penalty spot as he send Farrugia the opposite side of the ball.

47min: Jason Lee Vandelanoite header saved by Borg after a Frendo corner.

48min: Qormi 2-1. A defensive blunder by Hamrun sees Qormi close the gap to one goal with ten men by an easy tap in by Joseph Chetcuti.

Second Half:

55min: George Mallia who cam in the dying moments of the first half to replace injured Abubaker has his shot saved by Borg.

65min: Steve D’Amato affects an unexpected substitution when he pulled out Massimo Grima and inserted Mead Mifsud. At this time Hamrun were being dominated by Qormi’s ball posession even though they were playing with ten men.

82min: Marcelo Pereira receives a through ball, runs inside the Qormi area but is not accurate with his shot.

93min: Mead Mifsud tries a lob after a 2 vs 1 situation with Farrugia saving into a corner, with Pereira frustrated as he was expecting the pass.
