With the Maltese First Division League season back in two weeks time, the transfer window has ensured that the battle for top two spots is set to be as tightly contested as ever. Vittoriosa Stars and Naxxar Lions are the teams to beat after showing the best football in the friendly‘s, but rivals Gzira United have put a marker down this summer.

There is no bigger statement of intent than signing former Nigerian striker Alfred Effiong and Brazilian Caio Garcia Suguino. The former Premier League top scorer has joined the Maroons on a free transfer , despite interest Rabat Ajax.

Vittoriosa Stars coach Oliver Spiteri and the Stars faithful will not enjoy watching their many former players stepping out for Gzira this term, and the fact that a deal has been negotiated is a credit to United’s persistence. Sharlon Pace has intervened to ensure that a deals could happen, whilst Gzira United have obviously convinced Effiong that his future lies with them rather than a Premier League club.

The capture of Caio Garcia will give the Maroons attack energy, dynamism and a different threat, whilst a strike partnership of Effiong and Shead seems too good to be true. The Nigerian maestro’s signing will take some of the goal scoring responsibility away from Shead, who they have over-relied on at times last season.

Although Pace missed out on Anthony Ewurum, their attempts to re-sign the Nigerian and the amount of money they were ready to splurge before Naxaar Lions intervened again shows that United are hungry for revenge and to prove they are the number one team in the first division this season.

Vittoriosa Stars are used to having their pick of players given the financially assurance of their owner, but Gzira United have matched them and more over the last two months. The Maroons made Effiong the highest earner at the club. It is believed that Naxxar Lion tried to intervene in the 11th hour and snatch him away from Sharlon Pace’s grasp, but the player opted for Maroon over red.

Vittoriossa and Naxxar Lions will be just as good as they were last season, and better, given that they are growing and working together as a squad and their team will be hunger for promotion. However, with Jeffrey Chetcuti and Pierre Grima fit again and United bolstering their attacking options also with Steve Meilaq and Ryan Deguara, the Lions and Stars are set to be pushed all the way if they are to get a promotion for the Maltese Premier League.

Players IN: Jeffrey Chetcuti, Jean Paul Scerri, Pierre Grima, Bojan, Caio Garcia Suguino, Alfred Effiong, Ryan Deguara
