In their bid for next year’s Games of the Small States of Europe to be held in Luxembourg, MARPSC airgun shooters have already started making their preparations for the air-rifle and air pistol events. Last Saturday, in searing heat, a good turnout for the 18th Shooting Competition for this season was registered.

The Air-Rifle Event saw three shooters all fighting for top placing with some excellent shooting. Annabel Borg registered a personal best top score of 361/400 after the first 40 shots whilst Michael Xuereb achieved a good second place with 355 points. Newcomer Hungarian born and an ex-silver medallist in the ISSF European Championships in Air-Rifle Running Target – Haynalka Adam, achieved an excellent 3rd place with a score of 350 / 400 points in her first competition after a 10 year break. All shooters continued their shooting for a total of 60 shots and after the finals, Xuereb overtook Borg by the slightest of margins to claim first place. Marianna Kisvardai and Alison Vella could not compete as both these shooters were abroad, the latter is presently attending a two week seminar in Olympism in Greece through an MOC Scholarship.

In the airpistol event, there was no stopping Ray Cacciattolo in winning the event in style after notching a top score of 548/600 points. Hot on his heels was Stephen Vassallo coming a close second and Mario Mallia Milanes, who is improving with every competition, came in third place. Martin Grech and Josette Galea Calleja were 4th and 5th respectively. The end placing did not change after a tense final shootout
