International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach met with members of the press at San Marino and spoke about the important role GSSE have in the Olympic family and said that the governing body were committed to continue to increase their assistance towards athletes from the small European countries.

“We are committee to maintain our assistance to Small European countries and even strengthen our mechanisms biggest it’s imperative that we ensure that all the countries with the IOC fold have the tools to make their natural progression,” Bach said.

“During my term as president of the IOC I would like to see one record to be broke that of the number of National Olympic Committees who win a medal at the Olympic Games and hopefully this can be achieved in the next edition in Tokyo in 2020.

Bach admitted that the GSSE still held a lot of charm but said that he would not be in favour of a further expansion to the biennial Games.

“The GSSE do not fall directly under the jurisdiction of the IOC but if I can give an advice it’s not necessarily healthy for the Games that they get bigger and bigger in the next few years,” Bach said.

“The Games have already a particular charm that is created by the closeness that exists between the participating countries created in the various stadiums and venues. I feel that if more countries had to compete this would inevitably disappear.”
