Malta’s top air-pistol shooter made it to the top of the score-board at the Welsh Airgun Championships held earlier this month at the Cardiff Sports Centre in Wales. Eleanor Bezzina took pat in no less than 5 air-pistol A Class shooting competitions against stiff opponents coming from England, Scotland, Guernsey, Norway, Gibraltar and Wales. In all these competitions which were held over the weekend, Eleanor managed a podium place in each one. Her final tally of medals consisted of 3 Golds, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze.

Her first competition was a mixed event where she was competing with 29 top British shooters where she achieved an excellent score of 563/600 to win her first gold medal overseas. In competition 2 she again finished on the podium for a bronze medal. After this she participated in another two Class A events to get a further 2 Gold medals whilst achieving world class scores of 1124/1200 and 555/600 points.
However, her best performance came in the main Ladies Air-Pistol event. Eleanor shot a fantastic 372/400 points in the qualification round to finish in temporary third place just behind British Champion Julia Lydall, and last year’s Welsh champion Aina Florli. The top eight shooters from the 29 other competitors then qualified for the final which consisted of another 10 shots. Eleanor scored the best final score of 97.7 points to lead her in a merited 2nd place ahead of the British champion but her score was not enough to beat Aina Florli who won the gold with just 2.6 points ahead of Eleanor.
