The MFA was forced to cancel and postpone Saturday’s BOV Premier League games not only due to inclement weather as per the press release issued by the FA’s Branding and Communications officer Mark Attard but due to the severe damage caused at the enclosure stand of the National Stadium and the Centenary Stadium.

The photos below this article, taken by one of our photographers, confirm the great damage that the stand suffered after the gale force winds that hit the island over the past hours.

Reports from close sources have confirmed that one of the first persons to wake up with a shock in the Ta’ Qali area was the MFA CEO Bjorn Vassallo who immediately summoned Victor Mifsud the Stadium manager on site together with other MFA staff to start cleaning and clearing up the debris.

Several steel sheets that formed part of the enclosure stand are still scattered around the VIP and enclosure entrance.

This one off storm forced the MFA to call off not only the BOV Premier games but also all other MFA outdoor games. A Police source confirmed with this site that the MFA cancelled the BOV Premier games at Ta’ Qali not only due to bad weather but also as a safety precaution to the general public. The area around the Stadium is still surrounded with Police no entry tape.

Update:
In the meantime the MFA at around 1.30pm issued another press release following the one sent this morning at 8.45am where originally the MFA had said that it had called off all the Saturday games due to bad and incliment weather: http://www.sportinmalta.com/pospost-il-loghob-kollu-tal-mfa/

After various media, amongst which, timesofmalta.com, maltastar.com, this site and One News featured the photos and footage of the mayhem at Ta’ Qali, the MFA issued a new press release wherby it explained that it had called off the games due to the damage caused by the gale force winds at the National Stadium, Centenary and the Hibs Stadium.

It would have been decent from the MFA should it had communicated the real reason for the postponent of these games rather than trying to give a different picture of the situation.

Many Mqabba, Qormi and Marsaxlokk fans had already voiced their disappointment during the day on face book after the MFA’s first press release. These football supporters were asking if the force of the winds yesterday evening at the Tedesco Stadium were more alarming than the weather condition of today. Yesterday’s games were played as scheduled.

The below is the second press release issued by the MFA whereby the the real situation was explained to the general public:
Il-Malta Football Association tavża lill-pubbliku li kawża tal-maltemp u r-riħ qawwi li għamel matul il-lejl, saret ħsara estensiva fuq iż-żewġ tined, tal-Istadium Nazzjonali u s-Centenary Stadium f’Ta’ Qali. Ħsara oħra, għalkemm minima, kienet irrapurtata fil-Hibernians Stadium u għalhekk l-MFA se tieħu ħsieb biex fis-sigħat li ġejjin titranġa l-ħsara li saret mal-lejl qabel mal-istadiums rispettivi jerġgħu jintużaw għall-partiti kompetittivi tal-MFA.Għaldaqstant bħala lok ta’ prekawwzjoni u b’kunsens mal-Pulizija ta’ Malta, l-MFA iddeċidiet li tħassar il-programm tal-futbol kollu, mill-BOV Premier League sal-BOV Third Division League, għall-ġurnata tal-lum is-Sibt, 10 ta’ Marzu 2012.L-MFA tavża li l-programm tal-futbol ta’ għada l-Ħadd 11 ta’ Marzu 2012, jiddependi mill-kundizzjonijiet tat-temp matul l-24 siegħa li ġejja. Għaldaqstant deċiżjoni finali tittieħed għada filgħodu.

JIen ghadni ma nistax nifhem, ghalkemm nirrispetta d-decizjoni, lil ghaliex thasru l-loghbiet il-bierah fil-Hamrun. Fuq il-kumment ta’ Zeppi, nirrispondi hekk. Meta, mhux jekk, issir it-tinda fil-Hamrun, serrah rasek li tkun tinda li tixraq ghaz-zmenijiet ta’ llum. Diga tajna risposta x’kapaci naghmlu ghax bir-rispett kollu lejn kull min jahdem bil-qalb, illum, b’umilta’ kollha, nghidu li l-art tal-grond tal-Hamrun hija fost l-aqwa f’Malta, u dan jixduh il-plejers, mhux xi erba’ armchair critics.
