With a 72-hole aggregate score of +13, JJ Micallef managed to secure second place in the 15th Turkish Amateur Open Championship that was played at the National Golf Club. The golf course situated in Belek, Antalya is a par 73 measuring 6086 metres.

JJ and Andy Borg (the other Maltese in the tournament) were among the eleven international players that entered the event with all the others being Turkish Citizens. Both are national team players and the Turkish Open represented their final overseas tournament before they head to Mexico in a few days’ time to represent Malta in the Eisenhower Trophy of the World Team Amateur Championships organised by the International Golf Federation.

The Malta players’ golf in the Turkish Amateur was a bit of a seesaw throughout the four days of play which saw them birdie 18 holes, par 86, bogey 34 and double bogey 6 holes. Indeed they ended the first day in 23rd and 17th place respectively but clawed back their efforts to finish overall 2nd and 6th place.

The difficulty of the National Golf course manifested itself in the overall scoring of the field with Ali Altuntas from Turkey declared winner through an aggregate score of +2 whilst the last placed returned a score of +106.
