Following his triumph in the Cervia International Tour singles competition on Wednesday evening, local champion Daniel Bajada continued to demonstrate his fine form as on Thursday evening he also clinched the singles and doubles titles of the Cervia International Open that attracted no less than 32 players.

In the singles event, Bajada, seeded no. 2, got off to a great start by winning all three group matches and then advanced to the last eight by beating Danilo Celli 3-0. In the quarter finals Bajada overcame Alberto Caroni 3-1 while later on he beat Roberto Gazzon 3-1 to set up a final clash against local favourite Fabrizio Ciampi.

Ciampi got off to a great start racing to a 2-0 lead however Bajada was not to be outclassed as he showed some fine play to manage to level the match at 2-2. Buoyed by such a fine comeback Bajada was now simply running riot as he easily clinched the fifth and final set to claim his second singles honour within 24 hours.

The two other Maltese players, Christopher Portelli and Mikael Debono, were both eliminated in the group stages though Portelli managed to score a 3-0 win over Stefano Budellacci.

In the doubles event, Bajada teamed up with Italian player Roberto Gazzon and the pair got off to a fine start by beating Budellacci and Mella 3-0 prior to eliminating Caroni and Cara 3-1 in the semi finals.

In the final, Bajada and Gazzon played against Ciampi and Godio. Following a rather slow start, the pair managed to recover to end up as worthy winners of the event with a fine 3-1 win to add Bajada’s total event wins to three so far.

The Maltese will be back in action on Saturday evening in the fourth edition of the E. Rossi Memorial.
