TEN PIN BOWLING: 2nd Youth Challenge, Zurich

Gold for Xuereb in Singles, Silver for Magro + Doubles Gold

Tenpin Bowlers and National Sport School students Sara Xuereb and Matthew Magro have recorded further success in the international arena, by making a ‘clean sweep’ in the 2nd Youth Challenge, held in Zurich (Switzerland) last weekend. While Xuereb emerged as Champion in the Singles Event, Magro claimed the Silver medal, and also claimed Gold in the Doubles event.

In the Singles event, Sara qualified for the Semi Finals (top 28) in third place on 885 pins from four games, while Matthew went through in ninth place on 836. Those points were then halved and a further three games were played, which saw Sara improve to second place (1070), with Matthew qualifying in 10th place (989), among the top 14 who would compete in the 3-game final.

It was here that the Maltese youngsters would come into their own. Xuereb managed to a further 661 over three games to her total, for a final tally of 1731 pins to earn herself the Gold medal, while Magro staged a quite incredible fight back, shooting a brilliant 730 set (257-208-265), the highest series among all 14 finalists, which saw him soar all the way up to second place for a Silver medal with 1719 pins, a mere twelve behind Xuereb.

The Doubles event was held separately to the Singles, played over three games. Matthew Magro paired up with Swiss youth, Marc Jorg and they proved to be a very successful match, as they took first place with their 1304 joint total. Matthew also paired up with Sara Xuereb in a second line-up, and their 1256 effort rewarded them with third place. The Silver medal position went to Swiss duo, Marc Jorg and Ramon Scholz.

Xuereb and Magro were accompanied by their coach Rick Vogelesang for their trip to Switzerland, as well as bowling mentor, Sue Abela.
