Gianluca Dingli – 11th in Sparco Super Rok World FinalsWednesday, October 24, 2012, 17:18
Gianluca Dingli finishes 11th place in the Sparco Super Rok World Finals in South Garda Karting in Lonato.
After having won the Sicilian Regional Championship in the Super Rok Class Gianluca qualified for the Italian Championship held in Siena Italy last September were he placed 22nd from 44 drivers. In this Italian Championship race it was a real battle for Gianluca and his team BRM Racing but as he has a Maltese Karting Licence he did’nt get points for this race and Championship in Sicily. He left a very good impression with the other teams and soon after the race he was contacted by the Fernando Alonso team and was invited to race for them in the World Finals in Lonato. As his contract was going to expire with BRM he was given the permission to take this new challenge with The Fernando Alonso Team. After days of contact he decided to give it a try. In the meantime the Rok World Finals organizers gave him the status of a qualified driver and representing Malta as a Maltese Champion.
Two weeks before the final Gianluca travelled to Sicily to meet up with his new team under the guidance of his new Team Manager Maurizio Capuzzo and mechanic Giacomo Balistreri. In these tests positive results were showed once again. For the World Finals he had to travel a week before to Lonato Brescia accompanied by his parents and supporters for testing before the Final Race with the Fernando Alonso Team. There were 75 drivers in his class and he managed to qualify for the Sparco Super Rok World Finals. In the qualifying manches he had a mixture of weather with slight rain and warm misty weather. The day of the final race started on a positive note as Gianluca was 8th in pole position. For half of the race Gianluca was in 4th place and trying to gain further positions but in the last laps his engine developed technical problems and he finished 11th place in the race. This was a good result for him and his team when taking into consideration that he was taking part with drivers from all over the world. After this result Gianluca was offered to continue racing with the Fernando Alonso team next season in Sicily and Italy but at this point he has still to decide his karting future. This was a great experience for him to take part in this International event.
Gianluca would like to thank Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport especially parlamentary secretary The Hon. Mr. Clyde Puli and Mr. Bernard Vassallo for making it possible for him to represent Malta in the Sparco Super Rok World Finals.
He also would like to to thank his main Sponsor Virtu’ Ferries who always made it possible for him to travel to Sicily, his employer Hetronic Malta (a Division of Methode), Naxos Auto Centre agents for OMP for his racing gear, Paul & Jacques Mizzi, Alberta, Korason printing services, Charles Camilleri & sons of Zoqdi Racing, Badger Raceway (Edwin Gauci) for giving him the opportunity to train in their premises, Construct Furniture, Rabat Local Council and his family who constantly give him all the support.
