Gergely Kiss and Samir Barac to join Sliema A.S.C in the Summer

In a bid to wrest the title from rivals Neptunes, and win their 32nd championship in history, Sliema have landed two world waterpolo heavyweights, a Hungarian and a Croatian. In a run up to the much anticipated summer league, to start in June, Sliema A.S.C have confirmed that an agreement has been reached with two Olympic gold medallists to join their ranks for the 2013 summer season.

The Ghar id-dud side, who have last won the league in 2009 have this year opted for two experienced outfield players who have proved themselves on the international and Olympic circuit. The players, Hungarian left hander Gergely Kiss and Croatian Samir Barac have an impressive record to boast about.

36 year old Kiss has won and impressive 27 medals in waterpolo’s top competitions. He has won three Olympic gold medals, one gold and three silver at the World Championships, two gold, one silver and four bronze at the European Championships, two gold, one silver and one bronze at the FINA World League and last but not least, one gold, two silver and one bronze at the FINA World Cup. He is considered to be one of the world’s best left handed players in the history of waterpolo.

Samir Barac captained Croatia in last year’s Olympic Gold Medal success. He was the driving force behind Croatia’s first ever Olympic gold medal in waterpolo. Apart from last year’s gold medal, he has also won an Olympic Silver medal, one gold and two bronze at the world championships, one gold and two silver at the European Championships, one silver at the FINA World Cup and one gold, one silver and two bronze at the FINA World League. Both players are very much looking forward to the start of the season, as this will be their first time playing in Malta, and both are aiming to make an impact in the local scene.
