Matthew Asciak and Elaine Genovese crowned Malta Open Tennis Champions

Asciak makes it a double

The Gatorade Malta Open Tennis Championships were held at the Marsa Sports Club. In the final of the Men’s Open Singles, Matthew Asciak won the title for the 11th consecutive time. Asciak  prevailed over Benjamin Carlotti 7-6 (5) 6-1 . Matthew has overtaken his parents Gordon Asciak and Helen Degiorgio , as they were Malta champions  for 10 consecutive years. Matthew Asciak won for the first time at the age of 15 and his opponent in the final, Benjamin Carlotti is 30 years old from France.  Carlotti played University Tennis at North Carolina’s University, U.S.A. The final was very exciting and the sizeable crowd enjoyed tennis at a very high  level. The first set was very close  with Asciak taking a 3-1 lead,  Carlotti fought back to go 5-4 up,  Asciak stepped up his game and won the first set in a tie-break by 7 points to 5.  The second set saw Asciak dominate all the way and his excellent drop-shots and volleys wore Carlotti down and Matthew won the 2nd set  6-1 in a very straight forward manner.  On the way to the final , Asciak beat Adrian Marcello Vilanueva, Raphael Sammut and Mark Gatt all with the same score-line  of 6-0 6-0. Carlotti beat Domenico Scordo 6-0 6-1, Kiril Nestorovski 6-0 6-0, Denzil Aguis 6-1 6-1 and Bradley Callus 6-3 6-3.

Elaine Genovese Won the Ladies Open Final beating Katrina Sammut 6-3 6-1.  On the way to the Final, the Malta Champion eliminated Emma Mallia 6-0 6-0 and Julia Tedesco( ITA) 6-4 6-1. On the bottom half of the draw Katrina Sammut Struggled to beat Ivana Kublickova 6-7 6-2 6-1., and overcame Brenda Galea 6-3 6-2.  Elaine Genovese, who was abroad for the Malta Championships last year, had too much experience for her younger opponent. The first set provided the crowd with some exciting moments but Genovese was too strong.

Matthew Asciak underlined his status as the country’s leading player by making it a double.  Matthew Asciak/Bradley Callus dominated the Men’s Doubles, defending the title they won last year. Asciak/ Callus overpowered Mark Gatt/Denzil Aguis in a one sided final 6-3 6-1.

The presentation was held on court No.1 at the end of the finals. The president of the Malta Tennis Federation, Dr. David Farrugia Sacco, together with the Chairman of the Tennis Section of the Marsa Sports Club, Mr.Godwin Borg presented the trophies to the winners.  The Malta Open Championships were once again sponsored by GATORADE.
