On Sunday 27th May, the second edition of the Garmin Kids’ Swim Run was held at the MFA Swimming Pool in Ta’ Qali for children aged 6-16.  The event was organized by top local triathletes Dermot Galea and Fabio Spiteri.  The main aim of these events is to generate interest in triathlon within the younger generation.

This event was better attended than the first race, with 47 children participating in the various categories.  Children were grouped into five main age groups, each racing over different distances.  The introduction of the new age group 6-7 years old proved to be highly contested over a distance of 50m swimming and 300m running. The boys’ race was won by Thomas Wood (3.20), followed closely by Justin Camilleri and Nathan Cachia, while  the girls’ race was won by Emily Grech Carr (2:40), with Charlotte Spencer and Sophie Zammit completing the podium.

The race for the 8 to 9 year olds was won by Jake Bonavia who covered the 100m swim and 600m run in 3mins 29sec, followed by Luke Grech Carr and Sean Camilleri.  The girls’ race was won by Callie Hock in 5mins 37sec, with Beatrice Ambery and Maja Glumar in second and third respectively.  The race for the 10 to 11 year olds was hotly contested, with Sliema swimmer Kyle Buhagiar winning this race for the second time and Dylan Cachia and Matthew Tabone completing the podium.  The girls’ race was won by Neptunes Swimmer Maya Azzopardi in 6mins 27sec, followed by Andrea Friggieri and Rebecca Xerri.  This race consisted of 150m swimming and 800m running.

The last age group was the 12 to 13 year olds who swam 200m and ran 1000m Run.  Sean Mohom won the boys’ race in 8mins 25sec; 21sec faster than Christian Von Brockdorff, whilst Matthew Vella won the 14 year olds’ race in 10mins 30sec.  Martha Cachia came first in the female category in 15mins 30sec.   The last event of the day was the Open category swim-run which consisted of a 400m swim followed by 3 kilometers running.

The first male to cross the line was Birkirkara St. Joseph’s National Team triathletes Steve Chetcuti (15.37), closely followed by team mate David Agius Lia.  George Vella, former national team triathletes, came in third in his first race after a short halt in the multisport events. First female was Hannah Pace in 16mins 50sec, followed by Stephanie Alden and Nina Zammit. The event was sponsored by Garmin-Malta, MFA Swimming Pool, Spinach Fitness Centre and Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club.
