Galea,Bonello Spiteri register victories in Triathlon Series

Birkirkara St. Joseph’s national champion Keith Galea and St. Patrick’s Danica Bonello Spiteri registered emphatic victories in the first race of the Festina The Cyclist Triathlon Series organised by Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club at Birzebbuga.


Galea finished the 750-metre swim in 10 minutes, 29 seconds, 7 seconds ahead of team-mate Graham Borg.  Joe Cremona (Birkirkara St. Joseph) was third out ofPrettyBayin 11 minutes, 11 seconds.  In the 20-kilometre bike segment of the race, Fabio Spiteri of Agones S.C. and Borg tried to close the gap on Galea, and although they both had a better cycling time, it was not good enough.  Galea finished the undulating 20 kilometres onHal Far Roadin 32 minutes, 27 seconds, still enjoying a hefty lead at the start of the final 5-kilometre run. Not only did the Birkirkara man win the race in one hour, two minutes, 25 seconds, he even managed to register the best time of the run segment in 18 minutes, 20 seconds.  The battle for second place was won by Fabio Spiteri who finished the race in one hour, three minutes, 53 seconds, 18 seconds in front of Birkirkara St. Joseph’s Graham Borg.


In the women’s race, Danica Bonello Spiteri made her intentions of winning back the championship she lost last year very clear. Her performance was outstanding in all the segments of the race.  Athleta Pembroke’s Hannah Pace was first out of the water after swimming the 750 metres in 11 minutes, 10 seconds, 7 seconds ahead of Bonello Spiteri, and 15 seconds in front of Mellieha A.C.’s Margaret Seguna.  Bonello Spiteri quickly took the lead as soon as she started the 20-kilometre cycle, opening a two-minute lead by the time she started the 5-kilometre run.  Second placed Pace finished the cycle in 37 minutes, 8 seconds, with Birkirkara St. Joseph’s reigning champion Michelle Vella Wood a close third.  The St. Patrick’s triathlete ran the 5 kilometres in 19 minutes, 49 seconds to win the race in 1 hour, 7 minutes, 13 seconds.  Pace finished second in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 22 seconds and Vella Wood finished third in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 54 seconds.


The second race in this series will be held on Sunday, 13th July 2014.
