Futsal: Bidnija River Plate BonanzaTuesday, September 20, 2011, 17:56
At the end of a forty minute futsal game it was Excess River Plate (RP) Bidnija who won their first league match this year against a gritty White Eagles Mosta FC. Mario Gaffiero’s team was nearly overhauled this summer and presented itself with some high value signings which had the best of last year’s league winners in the first half.
The half time result was 5-4 and even though it showed a balance at both ends, White Eagles were always one goal up for the first twenty minutes. The goal mouth mistakes by the ex Sliema Team proved fatal as the experienced Excess RP Bidnija punished their adversaries with clinical finishes and typical futsal moves.
Vojko Martinovic, Ibrahim Tarek, Alexander Ribic, and Florin Anton combined well to bag in their first three points. Even though Martinovic looked exhausted the Excess RP Bidnija had ten minutes to change and utilise all the fringe players.
White Eagles had familiar faces on the pitch with Ricardo Saverino and Ishmail Achami combining very well in the first half but their star player Jesmond Micallef attracted the eye of the national team coach Vic Hermans and everyone at the Sports Pavillion. Sportinmalta.com man of the match was definitely Jesmond Micallef, for his natural futsal movements and his positive approach on the pitch. Another familiar face, Glen Barry, also gave a good account of himself with White Eagles and this sport will surely award him some great satisfactions.
Disappointing was the little use of last year’s captain Antonello Brincat who was utilised in the first half and deployed too late in the second half.
The second match of this year’s First Division Futsal League was won fair and square by Sliema Wanderers Bilbao and even though the score of 5-3 suggests it was a close encounter the Wanderers were totally superior over Pentagon Prop. F.C. Jonathan Pisani was a noted absentee on the coaching bench of Pentagon with the team looking predictable at times.

Last year’s relegated and saved by the merger of Excess and RP Bidnija, Los Street Boyz, made some fine tuning but still narrowly lost to the newly promoted Valletta St. Paul’s AFT in a match which ended 4-5 for the team hailing from the capital city.
Paola Downtown thrashed Hibs Futsal to the tune of nine nil. With the final whistle a malee broke out which was stopped in time by team mates and coaches. Referees should have taken note of the players and unfortunately will have to pay the price in their next match even though the game was finished. Downtown were superior all throughout the match. Their team is full of national team players who seem to be well on course of creating something special this year.
White Eagles managed their first win this season against their last year’s closest rivals Sliema Wanderers Bilbao. The final result of 6-3 in favour of the Mosta team does not reveal the true potential of both teams in the sense that the scoreline should have been much more for both teams. Both lost countless chances in front of the opposing goal and whilst White Eagles went up 3-0 Mosta managed to draw just before half time but in the second half the maroons scored another three to seal their victory!
