A timely move by the Maltese riders proved to be successful as they attacked with around 45km to the finish, They were joined by another four riders as the six man break gained an advantage of over a minute on the chasing peloton. In the final lap all collaboration seized between the front runners as attacks in the final hill took place, despite all efforts by the Italian opponents Formosa and Bonello were not shaken as two Italian riders lost ground.
Into the final metres it was Formosa who opened the final dash to the line as Bonello rode on his wheel to gain the first two steps of the podium. Formosa also won the king of the mountain prime as he transited first atop of the hill in the second lap.  ‘We raced together really well, getting into a break was the only way for success, We never thought that we would have fended off the chasing peloton till the end, into the final we had better legs and our tactics  proved to be perfect as we gained the maximum result  in this competition , explained Formosa and Bonello to the Italian press following the race.
