Flyers Volleyball Club – Ready for the new seasonSaturday, October 13, 2012, 8:25
During the past season, Flyers Volleyball Club has participated in all female competitive leagues organised by the Malta Volleyball Association.
Flyers have always given a lot of priority to its youth sector and have been regularly winning honours in the junior and youth leagues for the last twelve years. Thanks to our sponsors Global Capital and SMS, last season Flyers entered three teams in the U15 category and also its U18 team in the Female Senior 2nd Division.
In the U15 category coaches Stephen Farrugia, Mariette Saliba and Charles Gauci can be extremely satisfied with the progress achieved by all three teams, after placing 1st, 2nd and 4th respectively. The U15 league was made up of 8 teams. Flyers SMS 1 and Flyers SMS 2 had to play a decider with Paola after all 3 teams finished on equal points at the top of the table at the end of the league. Flyers Global Capital finished fourth in the table.
The results of the decider games were:
Flyers SMS 1 vs Flyers SMS 2: 1-2
Flyers SMS 1 vs Paola: 2-1
Flyers SMS 2 vs Paola: 2-1
Another recognition of the hard work done was that Stephanie Grech, Kimberly Grech, Francesca Gauci, Stephanie Zerafa, Sheryl Camilleri, Sadie Bunce, Lara Bua, Brooke Spiteri, Kelly Fenech and Martina Grech, were all called up to form part of the Junior National Team training scheme. Our players Stephanie Grech, Francesca Gauci, Kimberly Grech, Stephanie Zerafa and Sheryl Camilleri also formed part of the U18 national team which took part in this year’s Small Countries Division Junior Championships held in Malta in January. The first three players, together with Kelly Fenech represented Malta in the Fisec Games held in Malta in July.
Flyers have also competed with the U18 team in the Female 2nd Division. A good number of the team members are still U16 players and they were ably guided by Charles Gauci to finish in 5th place with 6 wins to their credit. They have gained valuable experience and have always played well when playing against more experienced and older opponents.
The club’s two senior teams played in the MVA Division 1 placing third and fifth respectively. Our first team finished runner up in the Super Cup and semi-finalist in the National Cup. Global Capital was also the sponsor of our second senior team.
The preparations for the new season are under way and Flyers Volleyball Club hopes to continue its good work this coming season. Our senior and U18 teams have just finished competing in the John Bugeja Cup and are preparing to start their commitments in the Super League and Division 1, thanks also to our sponsors Global Capital and SMS who have renewed their help to the club.
