Paola Hibs saw their unbeaten run in the Ladies Volleyball First Division League end last weekend against title contenders Depiro Flyers who won the game 3-2. Both teams are now joint leaders and a decider is required to see whether the title will head to Paola for the 8th consecutive year.

Paola were without captain Alison Borg but it was the Flyers team who surprised their opponents with their service and went two sets up, while Paola were not as incisive as usual in attack and were erratic. Although Paola played better in the second set, the upbeat Flyers players were determined not to let go and won it with a relatively comfortable 25-19 score.

The Paolites were at the ropes and coach Hili’s shifting of veteran Carmen Gauci to the outside position yielded the desired results as it gave more attacking options to his team’s setter. Depiro could not find the killer instinct in the third set to close the game off and lost the set 25-23. Paola’s players gained confidence and went on to win the fourth set 25-18 to tie the game and send it to the decisive fifth set.

It was Flyers who took the lead in the final set, getting to 14-9 and with ample match points at their disposal, but once again they failed to seal off the match, allowing Paola to get back into it and tie it at 14-14. But Flyers’ Agius had other thoughts as she struck twice to give a historic win to her team after over two hours of play.

Final Score: Depiro Flyers vs Paola Hibs 3-2 (25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 18-25, 16-14)

Valletta San Antonio marched on at the top of Men’s First Division League as they swept aside Mgarr’s challenge in straight sets. The first couple of sets were a mere formality as Valletta only let their opponents get to the 8 and 15 point mark with a good show of volleyball. In the third set they let their guard down allowing more space to their opponents, but Valletta sealed the issue 25-20, keeping their unbeaten record this season with only one game to go.

Mgarr vs Valletta San Antonio 0-3 (8-25, 15 -25, 20-25)

The second game in the men’s category saw second placed Aloysians Defenders overcome Fleur De Lys 3-0. Fleur De Lys kept the pace with their opponents in the first set, but Aloysians were stronger in attack, closing it 25-20. The second set was one-sided, with Alyosians trashing their opponents in no time to the tune of 25-10. The Fleur De Lys reaction came in the third set and could have forced a fourth set, but Aloysians dug deep to take it 29-27 and shut the doors for their opponents.

Aloysians now have a final game to throw the title race wide open when they face Valletta.

Final Score: Aloysians Defenders vs Fleur De Lys 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 29-27)

both flyers and hibs still have to play against fleur de lys so it is still early to say that there will be a decider. Fleur de lys are having a very poor season were they have lost to both southend and playvolley. This season fleur de lys seem to always reserve their best when playing hibs and flyers. we will see. It is wrong to state that hibs or flyers played bad for some phases of the game as it was clear during this tense match that their clever opposing team put them under pressure forcing them to make mistakes. It is no surprise that hibs and flyers are above the other teams because flyers and hibs do alot of work in their respective nursery and have been the top teaams in junior categaries for the last 4 years. roxette , sherika, leanne for hibs and dorianne debono, lindsay , amanda, cinzia, for flyers are all a product from their clubs nursery and all these players played a part in this game that promoted our sport to our next generation of younger players that were present in the stands . well done to both teams
