Sunday’s first encounter at the National Stadium Ta’ Qali, saw Hamrun Spartans and Floriana playing their fourth match of the season. Third place Hamrun Spartans fielded their best possible line up with a typical 4-4-2 formation. Todor Raykov’s side welcomed back captain Brain Said who joined Ivailo Sokolov as a central defender thus shifting Tyronne Farrugia to a holding midfielder position. The Greens also opted for a 4-4-2 tactical set-up with Mano Micallef today asked to fill the left back role. Duncan Pisani and Sasha Borg were left out of the 18 men squad.

The game provided some intense moments with referee Azzopardi giving marching orders to no less than two Hamrun players namely Martin Hrubsa and Steve Bonnici. Although D’Amato’s side were playing with 10 men as from the last minutes of the first half, his side always provided pressure on the Green’s defense. Caruana had put Raykov’s side one goal up from a close header on the   mark, but Hamrun managed to level the score two minutes from the start of the second half with Dene Shields when the Reds already had Hrubsa sent off after his double booking. On the 56th minute referee Azzopardi showed a straight red to the ex-Melita defender Steve Bonnici who had came in as a substitute after a tackle inside the box and awarding a penalty for the Greens. Ivan Woods made no mistake and made it 2-1.

Tension was high both on and off the pitch. A Hamrun supporter climbed the perspex that divides the fans from the playing field with ease, and ran towards the referee. He was stopped just in time by a classic rugby tackle by the then substituted Rupert Mangion who ran after the Hamrun angry fan and prevented him from making more damage to the team.
