San Gwann  0       Floriana   1

Floriana climbed from third place to top spot on 27 points from 12 games after leaders St Andrew lost against Valletta and second-placed Sliema W lost against Paola H.

This game was also played at a very fast pace and both sides created occasions of scoring. Floriana enjoyed the lion’s share of exchanges in the first period while San Gwann created many actions after the restart.

Floriana applied the early pressure. Sean Cipriott served Mauro Sultana with a through ball in the area and San Gwann keeper Dean Sciberras was forced to dive and save his shot. Dayle Borg released Juan Carlos Corbolan on the right flank and Sciberras neutralised the ball from his cross, and he did likewise minutes later from a Sultana cross from the left flank after he was put through by Jake Davies and Sciberras then saved a free kick shot by Cipriott after Corbolan was fouled outside the area, and Conor Borg served Matthew Debono with a cross from the right and the ball missed the upright as he tried his luck from outside the area.

In San Gwann’s first action after 15 minutes, Stefan Stayonovic served Michael Farrugia with a cross-pass from the left but he headed over the bar fom inside the area.

Floriana opened the score in the 20th minute when Conor Borg dribbled past an opponent on the left edge of the area and served Debono with a cross who first-timed the ball in the roof of the net from inside the goal area.

San Gwann reacted and created another occasion when Jan Tanti released Staayonovic on the left flank and the ball was cleared to a corner from his cross.

The last two actions before the break were created by Floriana. Corbolan served Debono in the area and Sciberras saved his close-range shot and Corbolan released Martin Caruana on the right flank who then served Debono in the area but he drove over the bar from a very ideal position.

San Gwann created two actions in a row after the restart. Greens defender Davies handled the ball outside the area and the ball was cleared away after the free kick shot by Gianluca Sant and Tanti was then fouled on the left flank and the ball was headed away from the free kick by the same player.

In another action by Floriana, Russell Cauchi, grandson of ex-international Tony, served Debono with a through ball in the area and Sciberras foiled him with a timely sortie.

In the 45th minute San Gwann came very close an equaliser. Stayonovic pouced on a loose ball outside the area and the ball hit the upright from his hard drive and from the rebound shot by Tanti, Floriana keeper Tyrone Gauci was forced to dive full length and turn the ball to a corner, minutes later, Stayonovic pounced on another loose ball outside the area and Gauci saved his hard drive with a diving save in two attempts.

San Gwann kept trying and they won a corner kick on the left flank which was well-taken by Tanti and Gauci was forced to fist the ball away to safety.

Four minutes before the end of normal time Corbolan was fouled on the left edge of the area and from the free kick by Dayle Borg the ball skimmed the far post and finished out.

Referee: Philip Farrugia                       Player of the match: Juan Carlos Corbolan (Floriana)

Hard luck San Gwann.. Although all players come from San Gwann and not from the whole Island.
