Floriana Basketball Club transfer window update

Sunday, August 4, 2013, 9:06

Today ends a very busy transfer schedule for Floriana Basketball Club. Following the championship celebrations in April and May, the committee immediately realised that a number of changes had to be made to the squad due to a number of circumstances.

After lifting the first championship for his home town Floriana, captain Ian Mercieca announced that he would be hanging his boots. Afflicted with a persistent back injury for most of the season, Ian decided to end his career at the top. Ian will surely remain in the history of this club as the first captain to lift a major honour for Floriana Basketball in first division.

Successful imports Australian Bevan Scott Camilleri and American Matt Glass also immediately informed the club that they would continue their studies in the coming year in their respective countries. A long search followed to get a valid foreigner for the season to come. On July 24th the club proudly announced the signature of American Derek Elston. Coming from No. 4 seed Indiana University, the club believes that Derek will be a great addition to the squad and Maltese basketball in general.

This transfer window also marked the sad but friendly departure of point guard Chris Sammut after 3 successful seasons. Chris will always be remembered as one of the best players to ever wear the green Floriana Basketball shirt. With his great ball handling skills and speed, Chris was essential for the club’s growth from second division to challenging in the first division and eventually ending up as champions. His antics in game five of the 2012-13 season are something that will be etched in the history of this club.

Adrian Baldacchino and Mark Ciantar also decided to part ways with the club and continue their careers in second division. Adrian and Mark’s long tenure with the club was exemplary in terms of commitment and example set. It was quite fitting that their last season in green would be marked with a contribution in winning the first championship.

The first additions to the squad were announced in June when promising youngsters Stefan Vella and Sean Borg joined from Loyola. Both under-23 champions in the 2012-13 season, Stefan and Sean were critical signings in the objective to rejuvenate the present squad.

These signings were subsequently marked by a long period of apparent inactivity with the committee working hard on the getting more players but finding a number of difficulties also due to the limited pool of available players in the Maltese arena. On the last two days of the market the club has announced three additional players that completed the squad.

National team player Peter Shoults became a green after a long and successful tenure with Siggiewi Basketball. Peter requires no introduction to any Maltese basketball fan as his skills and passion for the game are well known. On the same day, David Camilleri, an essential player of last season’s successful campaign, decided to once again wear the green shirt for the coming season. On the last day of the window the club also announced experienced guard David Agius who signs from Depiro Basketball.

The Floriana Basketball committee would like to wish Ian, Bevan, Matt, Chris, Adrian and Mark all the best in their personal and professional lives. We would also like to give a warm welcome to Sean, Stefan, Derek, Peter and David to the green and white family.
