FISEC games report from Hungary

A smaller than usual team of Maltese athletes has garnered a sizeable amount of medals in this year’s edition of the FISEC Games which were held in Hungary between 5 and 11th July.

No less than 26 medals were won, 14 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze. In this year’s edition the Malta team featured in two sports only – swimming and athletics. The swimmers managed 12 gold medals, 5 silver and 5 bronze, three age-group records and a FISEC games record. The athletics team, which was smaller, got 2 gold and two silver medals while a national record in shot put was recorded.

The Malta FISEC team in full team colours and accompanied by coaches Keith Bartolo, Davina Mangion (Swimming) and Angie Mangion (Athletics), this morning were congratulated by the Prime Minister Joseph Muscat at the Auberge de Castille where he also augured them well for the upcoming Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow in a year’s time.

Swimming Gold Medals.

Julian Harding (4) : 50 butterfly, 100butterfly 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke with a new age group record.

Neil Muscat (3) : 50 backstroke and 100 backstroke with two new age group records and 200 backstroke.

Raoul Stafrace (2) : 50 freestyle with a new FISEC Games record, 100 freestyle.

Amy Micallef : 200 breaststroke.

Pia Grech : 100 breaststroke.

4x100medley relay Neil Muscat, Julian Harding, Matthew Galea and Raoul Stafrace .

Silver Medals

Matthew Galea 200 freestyle

Team Events:

Malta Girls 5th Place.

Malta Boys 3rd Place – Bronze medal.

Martina Spiteri Bailey, Nicholas Sammut, Laura Demicoli and Michael Stafrace also took part.
