Melita registered their first win while Zejtun suffered a third defeat as both teams played three games. The Amateurs were the better outfit as they played methodical football and their short passing and positional play were a delight to watch.
The early pressure came from Melita. After a run down the right flank by Mark Russo the ball was cleared to a corner from his cross. Andrew Sant pounced on a loose ball and as he tried his luck from outside the area Zejtun keeper Meljohn Barbara saved the ball to a corner with a diving save.
Luke Mifsud was fouled outside the area and luke Zammit drove over the bar from the free kick and Mifsud served Zammit in the area and Barbara foiled him with a timely sortie.
In the 15th minute Zejtun forged ahead against the run of play when Clivon Farrugia pounced on a faulty clearance and scored with a hard rising shot from the right edge of the area,
Melita resumed with their pressing. Zammit released Andrew Spiteri in the area and Barbara foiled him as he dived at his feet and smothered the ball. Andrew Sant served Mifsud with a long throw-in from the right flank and Barbara had to dive and save his header from inside the area and Zammit was fouled just outside the area and Barbara saved the free kick shot by the same player in two attempts.
In the 24th minute Melita equalised as Spiteri dribbled past two opponents on the right flank who then crossed the ball in the area to Zammit who scored with a low shot, and seven minutes later they scored a second goal when Zammit served Dylan Cassar with a through ball in the area and after he was tripped Mifsud made no mistake from the spot.
Four minutes before the break Melita scored a third goal with a choral move between three players. Zammit served Mifsud with a through ball outside the area who returned the compliment to Spiteri in the area who netted with a hard grounder.
The second period was also dominated by Melita as Zejtun created only two actions. Zammit was fouled outside the area , the same palyer took charge of the free kick and after the ball was blocked by the Zejtun defensive barrier he drove over the bar from the rebound.
In an action by Zejtun Denzil Bartolo served Shaun Vella in the area and Melita keeper Josef Spiteri foiled him with a timely sortie, while at the other end, substitute Nicholas Imm served Spiteri with a through ball and Barbara saved his shot from outside the area.
The score became 4-1 in the 52nd minute as Sant released Mifsud in the area and though harrassed by two oponents he managed to score with a low drive.
Melita resumed with their pressing. Substitute Matthew Pizzuto served Mifsud in the area and the ball was cleared on the line from his shot and a flag kick by Pizzuto from the left flank created havoc in Zejtun’s area and the ball was cleared away with difficulty.
Melita scored a fifth goal in the 76th minute when substitute Ronan Hennesi controlled the ball from a faulty fielding by Barbara and lobbed the ball into the net from the right edge of the area, and hardly a minute later Zejtun reduced the gap when Andrea Abela entered the area after dribbling past an oponent and scored with a low shot to make it 2-5.
Two minutes before the end of normal time the score became 6-2 as Mifsud dribbled past an opponent and after entering the area he scored with a hard rising shot.
