St Andrew  1      Floriana   0

A first half goal after 30 minutes decided this game. St Andrew were the better outfit during the first period as the Greens were very erratic in their passing and also lacked punch up front. They also committed the gavest of mistakes by playing high balls which were easily dealt with by the tall Saints’ defenders.
St andrew now occupy 4th place on 19 points from 10 games while Floriana are in 6th position on 15 points from same number of games.

The second period was a totally different story as Floriana were a completely different outfit as they created much more occasions than St Andrew and a draw would have been a much fairer result. The game’s hero was St andrew keeper Gianluca Felice as he denied the Floriana forwards on many occasions with very good saves.

Floriana created the first action after only one minute as they won a corner kick on the left flank which was well-taken by Lukain Brincat and Leo Muscat headed just out from inside the area.

The Saints’ reaction was very immediate as they mounted three actions in a row: Clyde Cumbo served Mark Bonello Ghio in the area from a long throw-in from the left flank and Jean C Catania cleared the ball on the line from his shot. Karl Mifsud Bonnici served Michael Johnson with a throuigh ball outside the area and Floriana keeper Jurgen Borg saved his shot and after Cumbo was fouled outside the area Mifsud Bonnici served the same player with a short pass from the free kick but he drove over the bar.

In another Floriana attack, Brincat was fouled outside the area and Saints’ keeper Gianluca Felice saved the free kick shot by the same player.

St Andrew opened the score on the half hour when Nicholas Bradshaw pounced on a faulty clearance and he scored with a hard rising shot from 40 metres past a helpless Borg.

Claude Farrugia was then fouled on the right flank, Brincat served Muscat in the area from the free kick and Felice saved his close-range shot.

St Andrew created two further actions when Jacob Falzon was fouled on the left edge of the area and Cumbo drove out from the free kick and after a Cumbo flag kick from the right flank Gianni Vassallo headed slightly out.

Two minutes before the break Cumbo was shown the yellow card for time-wasting

Soon after the resumption Floriana went straight on the offensive and created not less than eight consecutive actions. Farrugia served Emmanuel Bezzina with a square pass just outside the area and he missed the upright by inches with Felice beaten. Brincat was fouled on the left edge of the area, he served Matthew Degiorgio outside the area and Felice denied with a diving save to a corner, which was taken by Farrugia and after Brincat’s header from inside the area Felice saved the ball to another corner. Joseph Briffa sewrved Farrugia on the right flank and a defender cleared the ball to a corner from his cross. Muscat was then fouled just outside the area and Felice had to dive and save the free kick shot by Brincat. After a run down the right flank by Degiorgio the ball was partly cleared from his cross and Farrugia drove the ball over the bar from the rebound.

Brincat served Briffa with a cross from the left and from his shot from the edge of the area the ball missed the far post by inches with Felice beaten.Emmanuel Briffa then served Farrugia on the right flank and the ball was cleared to a corner from his cross and Joseph Briffa served Emmanuel Briffa with a long throw-in in the area and Felice came to his side’s rescue once again as he turned the ball to a corner with a diving save.

In St Andrews’only action in the 68th minute, Cumbo served Falzon in the area and Borg denied him with a diving save.

Floriana kept trying , after a long throw-in in the area by Catania the ball was partly cleared and Rodney Debono drove over the bar from the rebound. From a well-taken flag kick by Joseph Briffa, Felice turned the ball to a corner with a diving save after a header by Ryan Farrugia and in the last action, after a cross from the left flank by Brincat Felice neutralised the ball with a diving save.
