First Division: Big win for Pieta Hotspurs, Buhagiar rejoins Naxxar Lions

Pieta Hotspurs registered a 6-1 win against Dingli Swallows in today’s first encounter at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Dingli Swallows this year under the guidance of former player Jason Cachia played for most of the match with nine men.

Quelin Rafao double and goals from returning Cleaven Frendo, Larson Mallia, Zarate and Rafael was the scores for Edmond Lufi’s team, Dingli striker Konda scored the only goal for the Swallows.

On Saturday Marsaxlokk managed to pass newly promoted Gzira United in the odd goal of 5.

Marsaxlokk opened the score by Andre GRabowski but the Maroons levelled through Alfred Effiong, he scored from close range after his penalty was saved by Omar Borg.

In the second half again Marsaxlokk took a two goal lead by Grabowski and veteran Rupert Mangion, later in the game subsituite Simon Shead made the score more respectable.

Marsaxlokk made several changes from last season and also fielded Kenneth Scicluna from the first minute. Gzira United who was also active during the market need to work more as a team as they was disappointing during the game.

In the second match Lija Athletics won against newly promoted Gudja United 2-1. IGE Adeshina and Erjon Bau put the Athletics’ in the driving seat, before close season signing Ryan Sell reduce the gap.

On Friday Luxol St Andrews and Zejtun Corinthians notched their first win of the season as they beat Mqabba and Birzebbugia St Peter’s respectively.

Luxol this year under the presidency of big spender Steve Abela handed the debut to Joseph Farrugia and Matthew Towns among others had a bright start as they built a two goal lead through Trayo Grozev and a Joseph Farrugia free kick.

Mqabba, this year under the guidance of Albert Busutill, turned the tables with a Mauro Bonnici penalty, an Emiliano Lattes shot cross and an Anizoba solo goal to put the Reds in the lead.

St. Andrews had the last laugh when 12 minutes from time the former Kirkop United striker Kerkov equalised and minutes later he snatched the three points for Wayne Attard’s team.

In the other match at the Centenary Stadium Oladi Majtara’s powerful shot handed a winning start to the Corinthians. Both sides made several changes from last season as they will aim for a ‘possible’ promotion place.

Angus Buhagiar joined his boyhood club Naxxar Lions on a permanent transfer deal. He is set to make his debut against Vittoriosa Starts next Sunday. The 25 year old’s contract expired last June and he was free to talk with clubs if they will agree to a transfer fee of around 35,000 euros with the Stripes.

Angus Buhagiar made 91 appearances and scored 5 goals for Birkirkara since he joined them from Floriana four years ago, he was part of the championship winning team in 2010. Current Birkirara coach Paul Zammit was the mastermind behind the decision to convert Buhagiar from a striker to a versatile defender.

Angus Buhagiar started his nursery career with Naxxar Lions before played for Sliema Wanderers and Floriana nurseries. In 2008 he played for one season with Tarxien Rainbows and was part of the promotion squad to the Premier Division.
