Fifth place for Malta at the Jeux des Iles – Corsica – 24 medal haul

The Maltese team at the 17th edition of the Jeux des Isles held in Ajaccio, Corsica between the 21st and the 25th of May 2013 rendered a medal haul of 24 medals – six gold, six silver and 12 bronze in total.
The Maltese athletes competed in five disciplines, athletics, swimming, gymnastics, judo and sailing.
Athletics, placing fifth overall, hauled 10 medals in total, with swimming who came fourth, garnering 8, gymnastics, placing second managed five and judo a bronze medal.
Francesco Aufieri for judo had some tough competition from the strong Sicilian team but managed to obtain a bronze medal in the over 73kg category. The Malta team came fifth overall.
The girls gymnastics team composed of Suzanne Buttigieg, Peppijna Dalli and Sana placed second overall with Suzanne Buttigieg getting a gold medal in the floor exercise and a silver in the beam apparatus. Peppijna Dalli got a gold on the uneven bars with a very high score. Ryan Busuttil obtained a bronze medal for placing third in the boys category.
In swimming, despite an unusual hand timing and not electronic timing system, the Maltese team who placed fourth overall, obtained eight medals in total with Neil Muscat getting a gold medal in the 50fly event and three individual bronze medals in the 50free and 50 and 100back events. He then was part of the boys relay team that obtained another two bronze medals in the 4x100free and the 4x100medley events. The boys team was composed also of Michael Stafrace, Jordan Calleja and Gabriel Dimech.
Placing fifth overall, athletics produced three gold medals, four silver and three bronze. Nicole Gatt got a gold in the 400m and a bronze in the 200m while she was part of the girls 4x100medley that obtained a silver medal. Luke Farrugia got a gold in the discus event and a bronze in the shot. Laura Sammut got a gold in the 3000m, a silver in the 1500m – she was also instrumental in the girls’ team relay that obtained the silver medal.  Bradley Mifsud who unfortunately ended up slightly injured towards the end of the games, managed to garner two silver medals in the javelin and long jump events. Janet Richard who also was part of the girls’ medley relay, obtained a bronze in the 200m. Nadine Gatt got a silver medal as part of the girls relay team.
Malta placed fourth overall in sailing.
With a placing of fifth overall, Malta remained in the same place as in last year’s edition of the games which were held in Sardegna. Sicily with the strongest and largest team came first, while Sardegna a close second and Martinique finished in third place.
The contingent was led by Chef de Mission Dr Sue Mercieca, assistant general secretary of the Maltese Olympic Committee, ably assisted by Josephine Calleja.
