FIFA Futsal Referee Franco Cachia Promoted to Category 2

Following an injury which kept Franco Cachia a month off the field of play and nearly a year without international appointments, his career on the international arena took off again between the 02 and 10 November 2010, when he participated in the 1st Mediterranean Futsal Cup in Libya. This was a tournament between sixteen Mediterranean nations amongst which were big teams like Croatia, Slovenia and the hosts, Libya. The Delegates present were FIFA Instructors/Observers Pedro Galan from Spain and Andrea Lastrucci from Italy.

Franco Cachia was involved in important matches such as the quarter final, where in front of an audience of about 4,000 spectators, he rose to the occasion and delivered a very good performance. This was so evident that he was chosen to be one of the Referees for the final between Croatia and Libya – a match that went all the way to kicks from the penalty mark to determine the winner.

After this successful participation, his motivation was on a high and the opportunity to prove himself once more came his way between the 24 and 27 February when he officiated in the UEFA European Futsal Championship 2012 Qualifying Round Group 2 Mini-Tournament played at the Topsportcentrum in Rotterdam. The teams taking part with hosts Netherlands were Russia, Serbia and Finland.

The confirmation that Franco Cachia did very well during this appointment arrived a few days after the end of the tournament when the Malta FA received very good reports and encouraging remarks from the UEFA Observer Mr Stefan Tivold from Slovenia. Added to this, the next day the Malta FA received the official notification that Franco Cachia was promoted to a Category 2 Futsal Referee on the UEFA Futsal Referees Categories list – which means also his future participation in main rounds of any International UEFA/FIFA Futsal competition.

This is really a great achievement for Franco Cachia, the Malta FA Futsal Department and the Malta FA Refereeing Department.

This promotion makes Malta proud and continues to establish that its level of refereeing is appreciated internationally.
