Youth rugby continues to flourish in Malta with the support of Gasan Mamo and under the watchful eye of Damian Neil, director of rugby. Last Saturday, the Gasan Mamo Youth 7’s tournament saw a record number of entries from clubs, with an unprecedented number of matches played at Under 12, Under 15 and Under 17.

Rugby 7’s will be an Olympic sport from 2016 and is a variant of rugby union in which teams are made up of seven players, instead of the usual 15. Shorter matches are played with just 7 minutes intense action in each half.

On Saturday, Falcons started out with wins in the Under 13 category, narrowly beating the vastly improved Gladiators by 19 points to 17. Falcons also walked away with the Under 15 title and hoped to make it a clean sweep with the Under 17 crown, which saw some excellent tries by local junior internationals as well as the top rugby players.

A notable try was scored by Malta U18 Captain, Matthew Ward, for Alligators RFU against Falcons, with Matthew crashing through the Falcons defence, powering through several tackles and making a 60 meter run to score in the corner. Falcons went on to win the match and then faced Kavallieri under new coach, Adrian Silvester, with Falcons playing some masterful rugby through their Captain, Italo Quelch, who created several tries with strong evasive running and good distribution. Falcons pulled away in the closing minutes to lift their third title of the day despite some determined Kavallieri play.
