Falcons win ladies title

On a dull morning, the wet conditions seemed to have impaired the Kavallieri’s advancement into their opponents’ territory, whilst the Falcons soared over the muddy pitch to control possession for most of the first half. It was a tense start with both sides putting pressure with the intention of gaining an early lead. In the last minute of the first half the Falcons ladies won a scrum and their scrum-half Claire Casha presented a well timed pass to Marion Azzopardi who fended off two tackles and made a decisive run for the first try of the match. Captain Daniela Casha converted for a 7 – 0 score. The Kavallieri were not giving up and indeed in the dying seconds of the first half they won possession through some clever rucking for Amanda Cassar to score a try. 7 – 5.

Half-time talk was quite intense with Kavallieri coach Sue Bradley using the last minute try to encourage her players into the second half and Falcons substitute coach Robert Portelli who was filling in for Carmelo Longo, calming the girls to focus and keep possession.

In the second half both teams moved into top gear with the backs producing some fast running with the ball and many long passes. Beverie Sultana was fired up to carry the ball and hit at pace with the support of Vanessa Attard and Brenda Cutajar for a quick try near the corner flag. In the last 2 minutes of the game Kavallieri were charging hard and came close to scoring a try but Martina Vassallo denied Charlene Vassallo from running over the try line.

Eventually the Falcons took the upper hand as their forwards gained possession to pass a quick ball to the backs and set up Beverie Sultana for the try for a 12 point lead. Kavallieri were brave in keeping possession and their persistence paid off when Amanda Cassar intercepted a pass and charged her way over the try line. This made the score 17 – 10 and a tense finale was guaranteed for this epic match. With a few seconds left on the clock the game was high in excitement with Kavallieri fighting hard for possession but the Falcons kept their composure well to manage the lead to the final whistle that sealed the game and the 2009 – 2010 ladies league.
