Paola H   1     Valletta   1

A draw was a fair result in this game as both teams had their very good moments and neither side dominated the other. Following this game Valletta are second in the table on 17 points from 8 games while Paola H are in the 8th position on 9 points also from 8 games.

Valletta created the first two actions. Kurt Drakary seerved Dermond Micallef with a through ball outside the area but Damon Grima foiled him witha timely clearance and Micallef received the ball from a long drop kick by keeper Ryan Caruana in the area and Jurgen Sultana back-headed the ball to his keeper Rudy Briffa.

In Paola’s first action, they won a corner kick on the right flank which was taken by Jurgen De Gabriele which created havoc in City’s area but the ball was somehow cleared to safety.

The reaction by Valletta was very immediate as they mounted two actions in a row. Leon Camilleri was fouled on the left edge of the area and Briifa had to dive abd save the free kick shot by Drakary, minutes later Camilleri was again fouled on the same spot by Matthew Camilleri who was shown the yellow card and this time Jean C Seychell drove well off target from the free kick, at the ether end, Joseph Mbong Essien was fouled outside the area and the ball hit the defensive barrier from the free kick shot by Sultana and was eventually cleared.

In the last action before the break Valletta were denied by the woodwork when Ian Montanaro was fouled outside the area and the ball hit the upper part of the bar from the free kick by Tristan Nappa Licari.

Six minutes after the restart Paola H opened the score when Mbong Essien was fouled just outside the area and Degabriele scored with a strong rising shot from the free kick, and three minutes later they came close to double the score when Mbong Essien served De Gabriele with a through pass and the ball missed the upright as he tried his luck with a lob.

In the 51st minute it was Paola’s turn to be denied by the wood work. Damon Grima served Degabriele on the left flank and the ball hit the lower part of the far post from his lob and ended in Caruana’s waiting hands, from the same action, Caruana served Micallef with a drop kick who then served Drakary with a square pass and Briffa saved his effort from outside the area.

In the 62nd minute Nappa Licari should have equalised for Valletta but he skied the ball from two metres with only Briffa to beat after he was put through by Micallef.

Valletta equalised in the 64th minute when Drakary served Micallef in the area and he was pushed by a defender and Montanaro converted the resultant penalty with a hard grounder.

Just before the final whistle Paola H were reducued to ten men as Jurgen Sultana was shown the red card after a second booking.
