Fabio Spiteri crossing the finishing line

Fabio Spiteri finished 2nd in a field of 135 athletes who were taking part in the Golden Tulip Triathlon held last Saturday 30th April. The Race, which was the second of a series of 5, consisted of a Swim of 600m, followed by a Bike of 26km and finishing with a Run of 6km.

Spiteri, who is currently in the Emirates training for his upcoming Ironman in Austria in 10 weeks’ time, emerged from the lake in 25th position, doing the swim in 10m:02s. On the bike he managed to overtake 10 athletes, averaging a speed of 41.8km/hr. At the start of the Run, Spiteri knew that he was in the top 15 places.

As the temperature climbed to over 40 degrees and the sun wilted the energy of some of the athletes in front of him, Spiteri surged forward, overtaking all except the winner, Edward Hawkins (UK) who finished in 1hr:12m:17s. Spiteri covered the 6km Run in the best time of 20m:25s, averaging a speed of 3m:25s/km and finishing the Race in 1hr:15m:13s. In third place was Clint Covey just 7 seconds behind.

The podium finish has understandably elated Spiteri and, after having spent most of the 2009 season out with an injury, has put him in the right frame of mind for his appointment with Ironman in July.
