Exiles miss opportunity to pull off surprise

Sliema Mc Donalds had to overcome a very stiff challenge by Exiles Jet Services to secure the two points that keep them within reach of Neptunes in the First Division League. The Exiles players have only themselves to blame for not being able to capitalise on clear scoring opportunities, especially veteran and ex-Sliema stalwarth John Paris who missed a number of very good chances in the first two sessions.

Exiles’ star on the day was definitely young keeper Alan Borg Cole who managed a string of saves that kept his team in the running until the final minutes. Sliema, on the other hand, had John Soler firing in four important goals, while Meli and Gabaretta also pitched in to the damage on Borg Cole’s net.

Exiles got on the scoresheet first through Rizzo Naudi and Cousin with Soler ending the session 2-1 in Exiles’ favour. Equilibrium was maintained in the second session but Sliema ended it with a one goal advantage (4-3), and could have even made it 5-3 had Kunac not hit the post from a penalty.

A three goal run in the third session gave the Blues some peace of mind but Paris and Cousin once again made it a two goal game at 7-5 in Sliema’s favour. The Frenchman replied to Brownrigg’s flick and Meli’s thundering shot to make it 9-6 for Sliema at the end of the third session.

Referee Dalli was very hotly contested by the Sliema bench for Privitera’s infringement when converting a goal, and also due to an alleged punch by Sliema’s Debono on Cousin.

A flurry of goals by Sliema, towards the end of the match secured the points for the Blues en route to a do-or-die match against Neptunes on the 4th September.
