The fifth round of the National Point Series of the Malta Mountain Bike Association was recently held at Has Saptan valley in Gudja. The race which was organised by the Agones Sfc with the assistance of the Gudja Local Council was planned specifically to be very technical. Various categories were held including a fun run for children prior to the actual race. The main event was the Elite race which was contested by a full field of riders. The race turned into active mode right from the start when Mark Bonnici took the front setting the pace.

Maurice Formosa and Etienne Bonello immediately followed his move as the trio immediately opened a slight gap on the rest of the field. Bonnici persisted on the pace setting with Formosa and Bonello helping in his effort. Towards the first climb Bonello upped the pace mid way however he was closely watched by his racing partners. Into the second lap a more decisive progression from the bottom of the hill all the way to the top proved to be successful as Bonello managed to break free and take the lead of the race. Bonnici, perhaps suffering from his initial efforts failed to close the gap on Bonello with Formosa who was trailing behind Bonnici managed to join the latter.

They rode in tandem in chase of Bonello who by the end extended his lead to 55 seconds to win the race in 1:08:15. Bonnici finished second in 1:09:05 with Formosa in third a few meters behind. Marie Claire Aquilina won the ladies category with Donatelle Camilleri and Caroline Zammit in second and third place respectively. Justin Gauci won the sports category followed by Pierre Spiteri and Darren Zahra. Kevin Muscat was the best amongst the masters with Andrew Fleri Soler and Charles Sammut completing the podium. The Mayor of Gudja congratulated all riders for their efforts and thanked them for the clean up activity which was held in the valley the day before the race.  The National Points Series comes to an end this Sunday with the final round in Dellimara
