It was a dream debut in the USA for Maltese forward Etienne Barbara in the USSF Division 2 Pro League when he led the Carolina RailHawks to victory on Saturday night when they faced AC St. Louis in their season opener.

Barbara immediately left his mark with just four minutes on the clock with a fine shot after he took the ball away from a St. Louis defender from just outside the penalty area.

Without knowing, Barbara made history, because his was the first goal in the history of the United States Soccer Federation Division 2 — a league formed for this year only as a compromise between the United Soccer League and the breakaway North American Soccer League.

He added another goal to his tally in the 25th minute with a spectacular first-time volley from a Cory Elenio cross to seal the encounter. “It was a good cross from Cory,” Barbara said. “I couldn’t miss from there. It was too good to miss.”

In the 66th minute Barbara was once again in the thick of the action with a perfect pass to Josh Gardner who scored, but the latter was judged offside.

Carolina Coach had words of praise for Barbara, “He can offer us a lot because he’s a threat with his pace but also he’s so strong that he can hold the ball up, and as you could see tonight, he can finish. He only had two chances, and he took them. So that was good.”
