Encouraging results for Maltese shooters in Catania

Last weekend the Malta Shooting Team had the opportunity to be invited to participate at the final competitions of the Campionato Regionale Federale of Sicily at the Tiro A Segno Association of Catania. The Maltese team was composed of top shooters coming from various maltese shooting clubs namely MARPSC, AMACS, MRPSC and successfully competed against the best Sicilian shooters in the various shooting disciplines.

The Maltese team was composed of Eleanor Bezzina and Josette Calleja (Air-Pistol – Ladies), Ray Cacciattolo and Anthony Mifsud (Air-Pistol – Men), Michael Xuereb (Air-Rifle – Men), Lawrence Darmanin and Romeo Zuber (ISSF Prone Rifle), Vincent Borg, Charles Wallbank and Anthony Mifsud (ISSF Centrefire Pistol). Gino Galea and John Galea were the team officials.

It is with great satisfaction to note that Eleanor Bezzina won Group A of the Ladies Air Pistol competition with her best score of 362/400 in her first ever shooting competition on foreign soil. Josette Calleja placed 4th with her first time score of 310/400

Lawrence Darmanin also took a merited second place in the 50m in the Men’s Group B Prone Rifle competition whilst Romeo Zuber who was also participating for the first time in a foreign competition finished in 3rd place.

Michael Xuereb, in his first ever foreign participation, also obtained a very good score of 353/400 to earn an excellent 2nd place in the Men’s Group B, Air Rifle 10m event.

Malta was also represented for the first time in ISSF Centrefire pistols, where Vincent Borg gave a tremendous showing with his new match pistol which earned him a historic 7th placing in his group when competing alongside other champion pistol shooters who were mostly police and army officers. Anthony Mifsud and Charles Wallbank followed in 10th and 11th positions respectively.

In the Men’s Group B Air-Pistol event, Ray Cacciattolo also left his mark by achieving an 8th placing in a highly contested shooting competition.

After the events, the President of the TSN Catania, Dott. Carlo Rossitto congratulated the Maltese Shooting Team for their success in these competitions and promised that he would be leading a team of shooters from their association to compete with maltese shooters next year in Malta. Dott. Rossitto then exchanged memorable plaques with Malta Air-Rifle & Pistol Shooting Club president – Lawrence Darmanin as a reminder of this special occasion.
