Electrofix Hibernians and Caffe Moak Luxol will face each other in the best-of-7 Play Off Final Series for the MSV Life Women Basketball League 2016 title, the 44th league championship in local women basketball history.

On the road to the final series, Electrofix Hibernians, who topped the league table at the end of the regular season, overcame Gzira Athleta in the semifinal series. From their end, reigning back-to-back champions Caffe Moak Luxol ousted PAVI Depiro.

The respective finalists’ coaches, Alex Farrugia (Hibs) and Charles Bonnici (Luxol), accompanied by Hibs’ guard Nadia Mifsud and Luxol’s power forward Steffi De Martino spoke to the media prior to the first game, this Sunday, of the first ever best-of-7 final series in local basketball history.

The Malta Basketball Association president Paul Sultana and John Buttigieg, Executive Brand Managemer of the league’s sponsors MSV Life also addressed the media.

Both Farrugia and Bonnici stated that they hope to have all the squad at their disposal and they are looking forward for a balanced final series as the two teams have proved to be the best on the island this season.

Hibs captain Mifsud said that Hibs are aiming to bring back the league crown to Paola after a dearth of six years. In fact, Hibs with 14 championships are the most successful women team but their last success dates to 2010 whne they also had beaten Luxol 2-1 in the final series.

On the other hand, De Martino stated that Luxol, being the reigning back-to-back champions are looking to make it three in a row and win their 12th title in history.

“MSV Life is proud to be associated with basketball once again. We know the game has a nice following in Malta and MSV Life’s sponsorship falls in line with our policy of giving assistance to the community” said John Buttigieg on behalf of the League’s main sponsor MSV Life.

“Every game between Hibs and Luxol this season has been an intetesting affair and we look forward to a contested final series” said Paul Sultana. The MBA president also announced that next season will see the re-introduction of foreign players in the women league apart from the introduction of new criteria for non-professional foreigners to play both in the men and women league as from 2016/2017.

After its introduction last year, the Finals MVP Award will be again up for grabs to honour that player who mostly distinguishes herself in this awaited final series.
