Easy win for Mellieħa

The final result is a clear indication that Mellieha were far superior than their opponents by winning by five goals against bottom-placed Dingli S. Mellieha are now in fifth place on 21 points from 12 games while Dingli are on their way to Section C next season as they have only two points from 12 games.

Mellieha went straight on the offensive as they mounted four actions in a row. From a well-taken flag kick from the right flank by Ryan Cutajar the ball whizzed past the far post with Dingli keeper Noel Micallef beaten. Mark Farrugia served Cutajar in the area and Micallef foiled him by diving at his feet and smothered the ball and later denied Mark Farrugia with a diving save and it was Mark Farrugia again who served Julian Agius with a through ball, the latter returned the compliment to Cutajar who missed the upright from outside the area.

In the 16th minute Mellieha opened the score as Mark Farrugia served Isaac Fenech on the left flank who netted with a low shot after entering the area.

In the first action by Dingli Giuseppe Versace released Robert Schembri on the right flank and Mellieha keeper Roberto Borg neutralised the ball from his cross.

Mellieha doubled the score in the 25th minute. Mark Farrugia, after beating an opponent, served Cutajar with a through ball, out sped two opponents and scored with a hard grounder from the edge of the area.

The score became 3-0 on the half hour. Jacob Farrugia served Cutajar with a through ball outside the area and the ball was deflected into goal by a Dingli defender from his shot.

Mellieha resumed with their pressing. Jacob Farrugia released Cutajar on the right flank and the ball was cleared to a corner from his cross, which was well-taken by Mitchell Xuereb and the Dingli defenders managed to clear the ball with difficulty and Fenech was then fouled on the left edge of the area and from the free kick by Jacob Farrugia the ball hit the bar from a header by Cutajar.

A minute before half time Mellieha scored a fourth goal as Jacob Farrugia served Fenech in the area who shot past Micallef for thr fourth time.

The second period was also dominated by Mellieha. Jacob Farrugia served Agius in the area and a defender cleared the ball to a corner. Substitute Aladin Sliti served Cutajar on the left flank and Micallef saved his long-range shot and Cutajar, after dribbling past three opponents missed the bar by inches from outside the area with Micallef beaten.

In a rare action by Dingli,Matthew Borg served Schembri in the area and Mellieha keeper Roberto Borg foiled him with a timely sortie

In the 69th minute Mellieha scored their fifth and final goal when a one-two between substitute Ian Magro and Jacob Farrigia finished with the latter scoring with a diagonal low shot from inside the area.

Eight minutes before the end Dingli ended up with ten men as Versace was shown the red card after a second booking.
