Easy win for Maroons

The Maroons ended their commitments by finishing in second place on 24 points from 12 games while Gudja are in third placing on 18 points from 11 games. Gzira were the better outfit during the game as they created more chances than Gudja.

Gzira went straight on the offensive and had two actions. Nick Zahra served Kyle De Leonardo in the area  and after Gudja keeper Kurt Baldacchino partly saved his shot the ball was cleared away to safety and Zahra then served Kurt Attard in the area and a defender cleared the ball to a corner.

In the first action by Gudja Wayne De Battista served Brandon Saliba with a cross from the right flank but he drove out from outside the area,and minutes later Bradley Cassar was fouled on the right flank, Gian Luca Bonnici served the same player on the right flank from the free kick who after advancing Gzira keeper Glen Zammit saved his cross-shot.

Another two actions were then created by Gzira. After De Leonardo was fouled just outside the area Lydin Camilleri drove over the bar from the free kick and minutes later De Leonardo was again fouled and Baldacchino saved the hard grounder from the free kick by the same player.

Gzira opened the score in the 27th minute as Michael Galea served Dylan Ciantar in the area who after beating a defender scored with a diagonal shot.

The score became 2-0 five minutes later when Jean Pierre Vella dribbled past an opponent on the right flank,crossed the ball to Ciantar in the area who had the easiest of tasks to shoot home from one metre.

Three minutes before the interval Gzira scored a third goal. Jean Pierre Vella served De Leonardo on the right flank and after entering the area he scored with a hard low drive.

Six minutes after the restart the score became 4-0 as De Leonardo served Ciantar with a through ball who after entering the area he scored with a low shot.

Gudja were denied by the wood work in the 48th minute. They won a corner kick on the left flank which was well-taken by De Battista and the ball hit the upright from a header by Keith Inguanez and finished in Glen Zammit’s waiting hands.

Gzira resumed their pressing and mounted two actions. Ciantar served Zahra in the area and Baldacchino saved his effort to a corner and Zahra then served Camilleri in the area but he drove over the bar from a very ideal position.

In another action by Gudja Saliba served De Battista with a through ball outside the area and Zammit had to come out of his charge to kick the ball upfield.

In the last action before the end Gzira won a corner kick on the right flank which was well-taken by Camilleri and after the ball was partly cleared Baldacchino tipped the ball over the bar from the rebound shot by substitute Ozzy Caruana.
