Birkirkara St. Joseph 20K Individual Time Trial 2014

Following months of speculations and transfers, the local cycling clubs paraded their new signings with very high expectations for the 2014 cycling season in the first event on the calendar of the Malta Cycling Federation. However, the first race of the season belonged to Birkirkara St. Joseph’s new signing Wayne Spiteri who overwhelmed all opposition to emerge victorious in the 20-kilometre individual time trial organised by his club. As expected, Marie Claire Aquilina registered the best time in the females’ category.

The Birkirkara cyclist clocked 27 minutes 40 seconds, to beat Malta champion Etienne Bonello of Team Greens by 8 seconds. Bonello’s team-mate James Mifsud finished third in 27 minutes, 55 seconds.

Marie Claire Aquilina (Team Greens) had no real threats in the females’ race. She cycled the 20 kilometres in 30 minutes, 53 seconds ahead of Birkirkara St. Joseph’s Michelle Vella Wood (32 minutes, 27 seconds) and Lara Buttigieg of Agones S.C. who finished third in 35 minutes 34 seconds.

Other winners in the various categories were Patrick Scicluna of Agones S.C. in the over 40’s, Emanuel Bezzina of Mosta C.C. in the over 50’s, and Emanuel Camilleri of Qormi C.C. in the over 60’s.
