Update:Disappointing finish to Maltese volleyball girls’ dreams

Monday, April 12, 2010, 15:25

The final two days of the 2010 CEV Junior European Volleyball Championships brought little luck to the Maltese team who succumbed to three defeats in the hands of their more experienced opponents.

The Maltese girls together with the second placed Cyprus team

Following Malta’s commendable win against Ireland on the first day of the competition with a convincing score of 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-22), on Friday the team lost with an identical 3-0 scoreline to Cyprus and Luxembourg who incidentally both made it to the final.

Cyprus left little space for the Maltese to express their game, and finished off the game in just over an hour with a 3-0 scoreline (25-7, 25-12, 25-12)

In the game against the home team on Friday evening the game was even harder for the Maltese who managed to react in the 2nd set, losing it 25-15, while losing the first and third sets with the scores of 25-4 and 25-9.

The final game, which could have given a bronze medal to team Malta was over in less than an hour with the Liechtenstein players finishing off the sets with the emphatic scores of 25-7, 25-8 and 25-5. This was a far cry from an identical game two years ago against Liechtenstein, when the Maltese girls missed the bronze medal by a difference of only 2 points.

The Maltese team in Luxembourg was made up of only 8 players which included a libero and a setter, meaning that there was only 1 player who the coach could utilise for any possible substitution.
