Diane Borg in top form in PotenzaSunday, July 1, 2012, 11:43
Two weeks ago, Malta’s Sports Women of the year Diane Borg was in the headlines after setting a new National Record of 24.15sec in the 200m sprint at a local event organized by MAAA at the Matthew Micallef St John Athletics Stadium in Marsa. A few days later, a small team of athletes also participated at an International meeting in Potenza, Italy, following an invitation by the organizing committee.
In Potenza, Diane was again in the headlines where she posted the best technical performances of the meeting for the women’s events. Diane won the 100m in 11.8sec and the 200m in 24.42sec. On the men’s side the star of the event was Italian triple jumper Daniele Greco who posted the 5th best jump in the world this year with an incredible leap of 17.47m.
The next International participation for Malta’s top male and female athletes will be at this week’s European Athletics Championships in Helsinki. The event, organized by the European Athletics Association, (who later on this year will hold its annual calendar conference in Malta), will see Diane Borg and Rachid Chouhal run both the 100m (27th June) and 200m (29th June) events.
Thanks to the support by the Malta Olympic Committee, both athletes will then join coach Mario Bonello in London for a training camp in preparation for the Olympic Games. At the Games, Diane and Rachid will both run the 100m event, scheduled for the 3rd and 4th August respectively.
Diane Borg and Rachid Chouhal are also supported by the 20/20 schemes as run by the Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport.
