Sta Venera      3

Zurrieq             1

Sta Venera deserved the three points that they won as they were the better outfit. Zurrieq also had their good moments but they found it very difficult to penetrate the Saints’ area.

The game was only five minutes old when Sta Venera took the lead when Francesco Falzaon released Ivan Bianchi in the area and he scored with a low drive past Zurrieq keeper Nicholas Camilleri.

Minutes later Tyrone Grech should have doubled for Sta Venera but he miscued his shot from a very ideal position in the area after a perfect cross by Kevin Micallef.

Zurrieq  then created two actions. Wayne Cutajar entered the area after dribbling past a defender but he drove over the bar and Miguel Bugeja was fouled outside the area and Sta Venera keeper Jonathan Bajada saved the free kick shot by Wayne Cutajar.

The score became 2-0 in the 19th minute as Dorian Mifsud served Grech with a through ball who after out-speeding an opponent entered the area and scored with a hard low drive, and minutes later Neville Cauchi received the ball from a long clearance on the left flank who after advancing neutralised the ball from his cross.

Zurrieq created the last action before the break when Wayne Cutajar was fouled just outside the area and from the free kick by the same player the ball was cleared to a corner.

The early pressure after the restart came from Zurrieq. Wayne Cutajar served Bugeja with a square pass outside the area and Bajada saved his long-range effort and Adrian Cutajar was fouled outside the area and Bajada saved the free kick shot by Wayne cutajar in two attempts.

In the first action by Sta Venera Cauchi dribbled past two opponents on the left flank and Camilleri neutralised the ball from his cross-shot.

On the half hour Zurrieq reduced the gap when Marius Barbara pounced on a faulty clearance outside the area and scored with a hard rising shot.

Sta Venera regained the initiative as they mounted two actions. Cauchi was fouled on the left flank and from the free kick by Zachary Mc Kay the ball was cleared away with difficulty and substitute Kane Pisani  released Antonello De Manuele in the area but he missed the upright by inches.

Just before the final whistle Sta Venera scored a third goal as Pisani released substitute Kyle Schembri in the area and placed the ball in an empty net as Camilleri came out of his charge to narrow the angle.
