Valletta   1        Sliema W     3

Sliema were the better outfit during the game and fully deserved the verdict. Following this game Sliema are in 5th place on 15 points from 9 games while Valletta are in 8th placing on 12 points also from 9 games.

Valletta were the first to threaten when Llewelyn Cremona served Mohammed Zaurouq in the area and Blues keeper Jovin Ebejer foiled him with a timely sortie.

Gabriel Aquilina was then fouled on the right flank and a Valletta defender cleared the ball away from the free kick shot by Jesmar De Gabriele.

Sliema opened the score in the 12th minute when Aaron Chircop served Paolo Dandolo with a through ball and he scored with a hard grounder from the edge of the area past City keeper Luke Pecorella.

Valletta then mounted two actions in a row. Zaurouq was fouled on the right edge of the area and after Kurt Drackary’s free kick, Brandon Grech headed slightly over the bar and Cremona served Drackary in the area and the ball missed the upright from his shot.

In Sliema’s next attack they doubled the score. Mike Vella served Chircop with a through pass who after entering the area  scored with a hard grounder.

The Blues kept pressing and created the last two actions before the break. Axel Xuereb was fouled on the right flank and the ball was cleared away from the free kick by Gabriel Aquilina and Vella was then fouled on the right flank and Pecorella fisted the ball away following the free kick shot by Dandolo.

The first action after the resumption was created by Valletta when Zaurouq was fouled outside the area and Ebejer saved the free kick shot by Luke Scicluna.

Sliema came very close a third goal in the 46th minute when Xuereb served Chircop in the area and Pecorella saved his shot in two attempts, and at the other end moments later, Drackary served Scicluna with a cross from the right and after Ebejer partly saved his shot and the ball was cleared away to safety.

Valletta narrowed the gap in the 48th minute when Cremona dribbled past an opponent outside the area,he advanced and after Ebejer partly saved his shot he scored from the rebound with a hard drive. The same player then was served with a long throw-in on the right flank by Dean Grech and after advancing Ebejer neutralised the ball from his insidious cross-shot.

In the 68th minute Sliema put the issue beyond any doubt with a choral move between three players. Xuereb served substitute Justin Pisani in the area who then crossed the ball to Chircop who scored with a close-range rising shot to make it 3-0.

Valletta then won a corner kick on the right flank which was well-taken by Scicluna and after it created havoc in the Blues area the ball was somehow cleared to safety.

Three minutes before the end Pisani should have scored a fourth goal for Sliema but he skied the ball from inside the area with an open goal at his mercy after he was served with a perfect cross by Aquilina,
