Deserved win for blues

Sliema were the better otfit in this game and fully deserved the verdict as they created more occasions than San Gwann. They are now in fourth position on 18 points from 8 games while San Gwann are in sixth position on 9 points also from 8 games.
The early pressure came from Sliema as they mounted three actions. San Gwann keepr Dean Sciberras saved a header by Keith Montebello after a well-taken flag kick by Jake Micallef. Axl Xuereb released Christian Mercieca on the left flank and the ball was headed away from his cross and Mike Vella was fouled  outside the area, the same player served Liam Cachia with a short pass on the right flank and the ball was cleared away after his cross.
San Gwann reacted as they created three actions. A one-two between Andre’ Cachia and Kenneth Aquilina finished with the latter crossing the ball from the left flank and  was cleared away. 
In the 17th minute San Gwann came very close to open the score when from a flag kick by Nicky Muscat the ball was cleared on the line by a defender with Sliema keeper Jovin Ebejer beaten, following a shot by Michael Farrugia and Aquilina was then fouled outside the area, Brandon Mamo served the same player with a short pass on the left flank and the ball was cleared away with difficulty following his dangerous cross.
Sliema the won a corner kick on the left flank which was taken by Vella and after Christian Mercieca served Cachia with a through ball he missed the upright from inside the area, while at the other end, Farrugia served Cachia in the area and he missed the upright by inches.
In the 30th minute Cachia committed the miss-of-the -match when he hit the side netting from one metre with only Sciberras to beat after a Xuereb perfect cross in the area.
The last two actions before the break were created by Sliema. Caine Abela dribbled past an opponent and served Vella with a square pass who missed the upright from outside the area and from a corner kick by Vella the ball was cleared on the line from a shot by Cachia.
The second period was a total dominance by Sliema as San Gwann created only one action. Xuereb dribbled past an opponent on the left flank who then served Cachia with a cross who missed the upright from inside the area. Vella released Xuereb on the left flank who then crossed to Cachia and the ball was cleared to a corner from his shot.
In the 48th minute Sliema opened the score. Christian Mercieca served Vella with a square pass outside the area and after Sciberras partly saved his hard shot Xuereb was on hand to score from the rebound.
In another action by Sliema the ball was partly cleared from a corner kick by Vella and Sciberras had to dive and save the rebound shot by Shaun Micallef.
Sliema doubled their lead on the hour when Vella dribbled past an opponent on the right flank, served Xuereb with a cross in the area and after Sciberras partly saved his shot Mercieca scored from the rebound.
In the only action by San Gwann Michael Farrugia was fouled on the right edge of the area and the ball was cleared away from the free kick by Muscat.
In the last two actions before the end, Vella was fouled outside the area and Sciberras tipped the ball over the bar from Xuereb’s well-taken free kick and Vella served Xuereb in the area and Sciberras saved his shot in two attempts.
