In running the 116th Boston Marathon (42.2km) last month, Veteran Żurrieq Wolves runner Alfred Debono has become the first Maltese to complete the so called five World Marathon Majors, namely London (where he achieved a personal best of 2:47:32), Berlin, Chicago, New York, and Boston.

Debono ran 4 races in US and Canada over successive weekends, namely two Marathons, a 4 mile race, and a 10km race – winning two of his categories and placing 3rd in another race.

In scorching heat conditions with a temperature of 32o C, Debono crossed the finishing line in Boston at 03:45:58. Albeit the timing, this was a notable feat given that more than 15% of registered participants opted out before the start, and a further 10% of those who competed ended up receiving medical attention.

Subsequently, Debono achieved 3rd placing in the Over-60 category in the City Parks Foundation Run for the Parks 4 Mile race (organized by the prestigious New York Road Runners Club), clocking 25:34. This 4 mile race had a participation of over 7,300 runners.

In his 3rd race, Alfred Debono won his Over-60 category and placed 2nd overall in the Game of Life Run 10k race in Toronto’s Ashbridge’s Bay Park

Finally, Debono won the Over-60 category once again in the Goodlife Fitness Toronto Marathon, and a credible 83rd position out of 2,600 competitors with a 3:09:13 timing. The excellent result was further testament to the impact the adverse heat conditions had on Debono’s timing during the Boston Marathon. This was the 23rd Marathon (18th of which were run overseas) he has successfully participated in and completed. Debono was assisted by Medcomms ltd. and Gasan Mamo Insurance.
