Following the recent announcement of an agreement between the ASA and Italian Water polo Association,  Maltese water polo referees Massimo Angileri and Alex De Raffaele were the first two Maltese water polo referees to be appointed to control matches in the A2 Italian water polo league.

Mr De Raffaele controlled the match between Muri Antichi vs R.N. Cagliari which proved to be a very tight and balanced encounter with the result of 10-9 after the home side scored in the last 29 seconds of the match.

The first remarks from Mr De Raffaele on his experience in Italy were: “I think that these appointments are going to help all local referees to become more experienced considering that the Italian water polo game is more technical and tougher.”

Unfortunately the game which Mr Angileri has to control in Rome was postponed due to flight problems for one of the teams.

The next commitment for the Maltese water polo referees is scheduled for Saturday, February 27th in Catania when Mr Ronnie Spiteri whistles the match from the Serie B (G4) Sportiva Nautilus vs Tubisider Cosenza.  It is to be noted that Serie B matches are controlled by one referee.
