The Malta Junior Open is a very important event for the country’s young developing players; it gives them a chance to compete on the international stage.

For countries such as Malta, a journey across the sea is always necessary; thus international competition is no as accessible as in mainland Europe and as a consequence can be expensive.

The hosting of the Malta Junior Open is a step forward for table tennis in the island and Joe Borg Cardona, the President of the Malta Table Tennis Association, is delighted to be hosting the event whilst at the same time being realistic.

“We are very proud to have been entrusted by the International Table Tennis Federation to organise for the second time an ITTF Junior Circuit event in our Island”, he said. “Although we did not succeed in attracting the number of countries we had last year, the level of play has been impressive with Singapore, the host of the first Youth Olympics to be held this year; Israel, France and Tunisia showing their strength and improvements made in the youth sector.”

Equally, Joe Borg Cardona is delighted with the efforts of the young Maltese players.

“We are very happy this year that against all odds we have succeeded to win an important junior team match against Cyprus; our boys are getting used to playing against tough opposition”, he added. “Daniel Bajada, 16 years old, presently our senior no.1 player and Andrew Gambina showed determination and great fighting spirit and were an inspiration to the other team mates. “

It is just reward for the untiring efforts of Joe Borg Cardona that he is seeing success.

“The Association’s aim is to increase the popularity of our sport in the island and look forward to increasing the number of ITTF events for the Maltese public”, he concluded. “So we hope that International Table Tennis Federation is happy with our organisation team and will entrust us to host other major ITTF Events in the near future.”
