Last seasons winners, Livingwell Health and Fitness club was the host for the first round of the Squash Club Challenge Trophy 2011-12 where 28 players representing 4 different clubs competed. Each team comprised of 7 players ranging from 2 ‘A’ players experienced tournament players 2 ‘B’ players with some experience including 3 ‘C’ players with little or no experience.

Out of the 42 matches played 28 of them were decided on the last game, proving that the rankings were evenly matched. Each player had to play 3 matches best of out 3 games.

It was quite evident from the start that there was no lead contender as all teams were having very similar scores. Marsa Sports Club were the first to start by playing a fairly new LivingWell team with the ever strong Marsa Sports club winning the challenge 12 points to 10.  A much improved Cynergi team had to play against the newcomers, The Malta Union Club, and it could not have been any tighter, the challenge resulted in a 12 all draw with great matches coming from the lesser experienced players, showing that all ranks in the team were equally important.

The next series of matches were the Malta Union Club vs Livingwell and Cynergi vs Marsa Sports Club. The surprise of the tournament was Livingwell’s loss to the Malta Union club with the latter winning 14 points to 10. This result completely put Livingwell on the ropes, opening up the entire remaining challenges for the rest of the day. Cynergi and Marsa Sports Club had all close matches only with a point difference between them with Marsa Sports Club just edging ahead at the end beating Cynergi 13 points to 12.

The last 2 challenges saw the Malta Union Club losing respectably against the marsa team only just losing 12 points to 10 whilst Cynergi ended up the day on a high beating Livingwell handsomely 13 points to 9.This resulted in Cynergi sharing the spoils at first place with Marsa Sports Club with 37  points followed closely by the Malta Union Club at 36 points with Livingwell trailing behind at 29points.

Some of the highlights of the tournament came from the ‘C’ players who although relatively new to the game showed some extreme determination on court trying to make their team proud.

Paul Sparling Livingwell Manager said “The attraction about this event was the mix of players, teams were comprised of male and female players, ranging from teenagers, budding national team players up to well known veterans. The on court excitement, sportsmanship and even after tournament social activity shows time and time again what a popular game this is becoming.”

The next round will be held at the Malta Union Club on the 12th November where the Marsa Sports Club and Cynergi will be vying to break off to a solo lead with Living Well itching to catch up with the leaders, not forgetting the Malta Union Club wanting to continue to ruffle some feathers.
