Corinthians crush the Lions heart in the decider

Wednesday, May 19, 2010, 18:11

Victor Tedesco Stadium was packed to the brim with fanatical supporters for the third division decider between Zejtun Corinthians FC and Naxxar Lions FC. 2100 spectators was the official figure given to us by the Stadium management in what was surely one of the tensest matches of this year.

A lot of fans had to go back home disappointed even before the initial whistle because as they arrived at the stadium the police informed them that the gates were already closed. Some of the fans were in Hamrun for their ticket at around 4pm just to make sure they will manage to see the match and Zejtun had seven coaches full of people. We wonder what would have happened had these people came with their own private cars. The situation was quite chaotic with O level exams going on at Maria Regina School situated a road away – we just wonder how the students managed to concentrate for their exam with all the noise on the stands! has looked into why the match was played at the Victor Tedesco Stadium and even though we were not given an official statement it is apparent that both teams did not reach an agreement on other venues.

The game itself was a thrilling encounter with the first half seeing both teams studying their counterparts and threatening to score from set pieces. In the second half it was Naxxar Lions who forged ahead and Zejtun Corinthians got the draw in the end with a perfect free kick from Charlo Magro with the ball hitting the inside of the post first.

In extra time the action was limited to midfield with both teams resorting to attack sporadically, and even though Zejtun looked superior, they did not manage to score. Naxxar Lions had their best elements substituted and thus they were limiting the danger coming mostly from the experienced Carmel Formosa.

In the penalty kicks Jean Paul Farrugia hit the post and missed and Naxxar were leading 3-2. Everything changed when Simon Spiteri and Darren Falzon missed for Naxxar Lions whilst Charlo Magro transformed his penalty kick.

Full time score was thus 5-4 in favour of Zejtun Corinthians who now play against winners of section A, Mgarr United FC, this Sunday in the BOV third division championship decider at 11:00hrs. Naxxar Lions FC will face Mdina Knights FC, the section A runners up.

One must comment on the amazing fans present at the Victor Tedesco Stadium with Naxxar Lions organising a choreography in the beginning of the match and on the other side the Zejtun Corinthians stand was clad in dark blue and sky blue. Some of the Premier league supporters should learn from both sets of supporters who were backing their team all throughout the year in numbers.
